In my 28 years of counseling, I deal with sexual issues from a God-base – adultery, fornication, promiscuity, sexual abuse, and porn addiction. I ask the question, “Did you learn about sex from a God view or world view?” About 99% of people answer, “World view.” This means from their peers, school, porn use, or being a victim of sexual abuse, etc.
I know from experience and education that godly knowledge empowers a person to make righteous choices in their life. When parents take the responsibility to teach their children about sexuality from a God-base starting at a young age, the knowledge gives children the emotional tools to use when the world throws the sinful aspect of sexual activity in their faces.
Most churches do not teach on these issues. By ignoring the subject of sex, we can act like we are non-sexual because we are holy! This is so untrue! Our children and teens need to know about the God-given gift of sex for marriage. They must understand why it is not healthy mentally, emotionally, physically, or spiritually to become sexually active outside of marriage.
One of the reasons parents do not talk about sex is because they are uncomfortable with the subject personally. This could be because of their own dysfunctional past sexually. If we want our children to be saved from the painful results of sexual sins, we must become educated and equipped to share the truth with our children.
I recommend two books, Preparing for Adolescence by Dr. James Dobson and The Purity Code: God’s Plan for Sex and Your Body by Jim Burns. Parents – read the books first then share with your children and open the door for discussion. Porn exposure is at the ages of 8 – 10 years so educate your children at a young age. This is a heaven or hell issue. Teach your children they are created in the image and likeness of God.
