Depression is now considered a disease. The Old French meaning of disease is ‘lack of ease.’ From my 23 years as a Certified Pastoral Counsel, I have found that emotional pain resulting from abusive or hurtful events in life usually has depressive symptoms.
The website – www.everydayhealth.com states, “In fact, major depression is the leading cause of disability for Americans between the ages of 15 and 44, according to the CDC. Understanding these very real depression statistics helps paint a fuller picture of the impact of depression in America.”
My computer dictionary defines: “depression – severe despondency and dejection, typically felt over a period of time and accompanied by feelings of hopelessness and inadequacy.” What secular psychology does not understand, God’s Word has answers for depression. Another definition for depression is anger turned inward. When painful abusive things happen in life, anger is a normal emotion resulting from the pain. If a person is never allowed to process the painful emotion of anger, sorrow, etc., it can create depression because of unresolved issues.
This is where God-based counseling can help the depressed person to process their life’s painful experiences through God’s truth. Romans 12:2 – “be ye transformed by renewing your mind.” The depressed person does feel helpless and hopeless, but God’s truth can change the thinking process. The Bible says we can be renewed in the spirit of our mind. In my counseling, I ‘walk’ the hurting person through God’s truth. Replacing the negative thinking with the transformative power of His Word. God is – Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father and The Prince of Peace. Counseling using God’s Word brings peace and healing to the depressive heart.
My heartbeat is to help hurting people through counseling, teaching and writing. Please call (636) 448-0121 and I will explain the process of nationwide counseling by phone/Skype. I ask for a ministry offering less than half of state counselors. I encourage people who call to try one session and it’s up to them to decide future counseling whether weekly, by weekly or monthly.
