Rebellion and Stubbornness are as sinful as witchcraft and worship of idols!

John 14:23-24 King James Version (KJV)

23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. 24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.

John 14:23-24 Amplified Bible (AMP)

23 Jesus answered, “If anyone [really] loves Me, he will keep My word (teaching); and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our dwelling place with him. 24 One who does not [really] love Me does not keep My words. And the word (teaching) which you hear is not Mine, but is the Father’s who sent Me.

Our actions prove whether we love God or not. If we love Him we will keep His commandments! This principle can be applied to parenting – if a child loves the parent they will obey the parent!

I obeyed my parents because they taught me the Word of God. I did not always feel like obeying, but I did it because I knew it was the right thing to do – it is all about choice! God says obedience is better than sacrifice!

1 Samuel 15:22-24 New Living Translation (NLT)

22 But Samuel replied,
“What is more pleasing to the Lord:
your burnt offerings and sacrifices
or your obedience to his voice?
Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice,
and submission is better than offering the fat of rams.
23 Rebellion is as sinful as witchcraft,
and stubbornness as bad as worshiping idols.
So because you have rejected the command of the Lord,
he has rejected you as king.”

Rebellion and stubbornness are sinful as witchcraft and worshiping idols. Your children will not know this if you do not teach them!

Proverbs 22:15

KJ21 Foolishness is bound into the heart of a child, but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

AMP Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; The rod of discipline [correction administered with godly wisdom and lovingkindness] will remove it far from him.

AMPC Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him.

Parents, wake up! We all will answer to God for how we parented. God told us to train up a child in the way that he should go. God told us to raise our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

Ephesians 6:4 Parallel

Commentary

Geneva Study Bible

{6} And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

(6) It is the duty of fathers to use their fatherly authority moderately and to God’s glory.

(c) Such information and precepts which are taken out of God’s book, and are holy and acceptable to him.

To admonish is to warn or reprimand someone firmly. Parents must firmly teach God’s principles to children. By example, parents must have their own intimate relationship with God showing the children because of loving God, they are obedient to His Word.

I often share Josh McDowell’s word, “Rules without relationship lead to rebellion.” Parents must model having a relationship with God. This teaching by example begins when the child is very young. Parents must nourish a relationship with their children. When a child feels loved and accepted, they are much more open to being taught.

Parents must teach their children about the love of God. God loved us so much that He came in the flesh as Jesus Christ to die on a cross for our sins. We must teach right from wrong. We must teach obedience and the consequences of choices. We must teach about heaven and hell. How will children know unless they are taught?

Never excuse a child’s behavior. As long as the child is in the parents’ home, the parent is responsible for the consequences of evil behavior. Always pray for your children, but never stop speaking God’s truth.

As pastors will answer to God for how they shepherded their sheep, parents will answer to God for their parenting. No parent is responsible for the actions of their adult children. But they are responsible to God for their parenting as long as the child is in the home.

We raised our children as we were raised. We were not perfect. But we loved God, loved each other and loved our children enough to plant the Word in their hearts because we wanted them to love God and experience salvation (Acts). Praise God, they did!
